Alhaurín el Grande is situated at the northern part of the "Sierra de Mijas". From its numerous "miradores" (lookout points) you can admire the splendid valley of the river Guadalhorce, which is full of citric and fruit trees and vegetable farms.
The Arabs called this place "Alhaurín" and since the era of the Catholic Kings it is called "el grande (the big one)" to distinguish it from its neighbour Alhaurín de la Torre
You can enjoy delightful sights over the riverside of Fahala river, "Barranco Blanco" (White Ravine) and its waterfalls and lakes of wild landscape, the viewpoint of "Cuesta de la Palma" and the golf court.
There is a wide range of local celebrations ("fiestas"), but the Easter celebration ("Semana Santa") is the most important religious one, recently declared of special tourist interest of Andalucia. Furthermore you can enjoy the local gastronomy, which invites with rich and varied food of the region in its numerous restaurants.
The main monuments are the parish church, the tower "Torre de Hurique", the chapel of San Sebastian and the chapel of the Santa Vera Cruz. Another interesting place is the "Molino Harinero de los Corchos", an old mill, perfectly preserved, which still works with the same system as during the Arab's era. Handicraft workers produce a wide range of beautiful typical needlework.
